STEROID INJECTION

Support Skin Through Recovery & Repair

Intralesional corticosteroid injections are prescribed medical treatments used to help reduce inflammation and excess tissue within specific raised, thickened, or inflamed areas of the skin.

While the injection addresses the underlying condition, supportive skincare has a different role: helping maintain comfort, hydration, barrier function, and healthy-looking surrounding skin throughout recovery.

Understand the Treatment

What is an Intralesional Steroid Injection?

Intralesional corticosteroid injection places a small amount of corticosteroid directly into a targeted area of concern.

By reducing local inflammatory activity and excess fibroblast activity, the treatment can help soften and flatten certain raised lesions over time.

Commonly addresses:

  • Keloid scars
  • Hypertrophic scars
  • Inflamed acne cysts and nodules
  • Itch, tenderness, or tightness within a raised scar
  • Localized inflammatory skin conditions
  • Patchy hair loss associated with certain scalp conditions

The Treatment Timeline

  • First 24–48 Hours

Small puncture points, temporary blanching, tenderness, or mild sensitivity may occur immediately following treatment.

Skincare priority: Keep the area clean, comfortable, and undisturbed while following your provider's instructions.
  • Weeks 1–6

Corticosteroid activity within the treated tissue helps reduce local inflammatory signalling and excessive fibroblast activity. Raised tissue may gradually begin to soften and flatten, while associated itch or tenderness may improve.

Skincare priority: Maintain hydration, barrier support, and the condition of the surrounding skin without disrupting the treated lesion.
  • Over the Following Months

Raised scars and other chronic conditions may require a series of injections spaced several weeks apart.

Your healthcare professional will assess the response and monitor the area for treatment-related changes.

Skincare priority: Continue gentle, supportive care as directed while allowing your prescriber to manage changes within the treated tissue.

BEYOND THE INJECTION

Why Supportive Skincare Matters

The injection and the skincare around it have different jobs.

Intralesional corticosteroids are intended to modify activity within the treated lesion. Topical skincare should instead focus on maintaining the condition of the surrounding and recovering skin.

A supportive skincare routine may help:

  • Maintain hydration
  • Support the skin barrier
  • Improve comfort
  • Reduce the appearance of dryness or irritation
  • Support healthy-looking surrounding skin
  • Maintain an appropriate environment for normal skin recovery

Topical skincare should not be used with the intention of counteracting the corticosteroid’s clinical effect.

Questions, answered

The science, made clear.

Explore common questions about our technology, formulations and approach to topical skincare.

What is an intralesional corticosteroid injection?

It is a prescribed medical treatment in which a healthcare professional injects a small amount of corticosteroid directly into a diagnosed area of raised, thickened, or inflamed tissue.

When will I notice a response?

Changes typically develop gradually over several weeks. Depending on the condition and individual response, more than one treatment may be recommended.

Can skincare flatten a keloid or raised scar?

Topical skincare is not a replacement for prescribed intralesional treatment. Its role is primarily to support hydration, comfort, barrier function, and healthy-looking surrounding skin.

When can I apply skincare after the injection?

Follow the instructions provided by your healthcare professional. Immediately after treatment, the injection site is generally kept clean and undisturbed.
